This week, we have been heartened to see the mass mobilisation against the controversial Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, which has now passed its second reading.
Much of the focus so far has been on the alarming impacts of this bill on our fundamental human right to protest, which we are deeply concerned by.
However, we are also disturbed by the other extreme, far reaching and detrimental implications this proposed legislation has on our 4Front members and other impacted communities.
Through our work, we know that increasing police powers will only lead to further harm. There are already stark racial disparities within the criminal justice system which we are actively fighting against. This bill will further entrench racial inequity and injustice.
Like many groups, we are currently reviewing the full scope of this bill and intend to release a full statement detailing all of our concerns.
